Vettathukavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

Vettathukavu Bhagavathy Temple, located around 12 kilometres from Tirur town in the Malappuram district, sits on the banks of the Tirur-Ponnani River in the village of Vettom. While the exact age of the temple is unknown, it is considered to be ancient and is believed to have been the family temple of the Vettom dynasty, whose last king reigned in the late 18th century. According to legend, the king of Vettom, a devout follower of Goddess Mookambika, prayed to the goddess, asking her to reside in Vettom. The goddess consented, and it is believed she took residence in the royal palace. The area where the king more offered his worship became the original sanctum, known as the Sreemoolasthanam. The current temple was later built a few feet away from this sacred spot. The presiding deity in the temple is Goddess Mookambika, with sub-shrines dedicated to Shiva-Parvati, Ganapathi, and Ayyappa within the temple complex, and Brahmarakshas and Nagapradishta outside. To the southwest of the temple lies the large tank known as "Valiya Chira," once used by the royal family, while the octagonal tank "Elanthikulam" is located to the northwest.
