Puthucode Bhagavthy Temple

History

Puthucode is known for hosting Kerala's largest Tamil Brahmin (agraharam) congregation. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Annapoorneswari, the goddess of food. At the northern end of the agraharam lies another temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Malabar Devaswom Board manages the Puthucode Annapoorneswari Temple and features a golden flagpole, the first of its kind in Palakkad district, installed on June 28, 2004. The temple, which had fallen into disrepair, was renovated in 1986, with Kumbhabhishekam (consecration ceremony) performed afterwards. The temple covers a large area and stands out with its spacious, four-sided structure called "Chuttambalam," built following the principles of Agamasastra. Daily rituals follow traditional more Kerala customs, with Cherumukku Mana Nampoothiris serving as the head priests. However, the daily poojas are performed by immigrant Brahmins. The temple opens daily for worship at 5:30 a.m. and closes at 10 a.m., reopening in the evening from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The deity’s radiant smile captivates devotees, and her full decoration in the evening is a sight that enchants all who visit. It is said that one needs a thousand eyes to fully appreciate the goddess's beauty and splendour. The temple welcomes all members of Hindu society. In the mornings, village pandits recite the Devi Mahatmyam and Sundarakandam for the well-being of the community. In the evenings, Vedic scholars chant the Vedas, with special mention of the Varam recitals during November and December, which showcase the scholars' erudition and skill. The younger generation also gathers in the evenings for community recitations of the Shyamaladandakam and Sahasranamam. The temple’s various duties are managed by the Variyam, Nambisan, and Marar families.
