Nambiathrakovval Siva Temple

History

In ancient times, a devout Brahmin and Vedic scholar (Nambi Namboothiri) regularly travelled to the Sri Rajarajeswara Temple at Talipparamba for Lord Shiva's darshan. As he aged, this journey became difficult, yet his devotion remained strong. To continue worshipping, he invoked the essence (Chaitanya) of Lord Shiva into his conch shell and carried it home. On his way, he placed the conch under a banyan tree near a pond but found the holy water drained when he returned. This site became the location of the Nambiathrakovval Siva Temple, as the divine presence of Lord Rajarajeswara had sanctified the area. The temple was built by a Brahmin family more from Payyanur after an astrological consultation revealed the site's significance. Consecrated by Tantri Sri Tarananellur, the temple became famous for its rituals and festivals. However, during Tipu Sultan's invasion, the temple was destroyed, leaving only the foundation and damaged Sivalinga. It remained in ruins for years until it was renovated by Rayaramangalath Mana. Later, a shrine for Lord Ayyappa and a new Ganapathi idol were added. The temple prospered until its administration was handed to the Hindu Religious Endowment Department in 2006, which oversaw further development and a grand Ashta Bandha Kalasha ceremony.
