The temple is situated about 7km away from the famous Padmanabhaswami temple at Thiruvananthapuram. Legend says that the area was a lonely place with only very few people living there in the ancient times. They used to hear the sound of bells at this place at night. Once they decided to investigate this and went to the place from where the sound of bells was coming. They found all materials for puja on a rock at the place where the temple stands today. It was the Devas offering puja to Mahadeva who had self-originated there. When the men reached there
more the Devas disappeared. As it was the place where they found the mani (bell) the place attained its name. A temple was built there to worship Mahadeva. The ownership of the temple changed hands many times till in 1966 it was left with the residents of the area. Apart from Mahadeva, there are Ganapathi, Shaasthaav, Navagrahas and Nagas as sub deities.
