Pattazhy Devi Temple

History

Pattazhy is a serene temple village located in the Pathanapuram taluk of Kollam district, Kerala. Comprising two panchayats, Pattazhy and Pattazhy Vadakekara, the village is steeped in history and natural beauty. The land was gifted to Pattazhy Devi by the King of Travancore in gratitude for the refuge and support provided during a fierce battle against the King of Kayamkulam. During his campaign to expand his kingdom, the Travancore king, with the aid of Ramayan Dalava and the devout worshiper Kambithan, successfully conquered Kayamkulam. In recognition of Kambithan’s devotion to Goddess Pattazhy, the king decreed that the village be named Pattazhy and dedicated to the goddess. Pattazhy more Devi Temple is renowned for its annual festivals, particularly Kumbhathiruvathira and Meenathiruvathira, which are among the most celebrated in Central Travancore. The festival is also known for its unique rituals, including Kambam (Fire Extinguisher), Alpindi Lamp Ezhunnallat (a procession featuring a small structure made of coconut leaves adorned with numerous lamps), and Ponnin Thirumudi, which showcases a rare idol of the goddess intricately carved from pure gold and precious stones. The village itself is blessed with breathtaking natural landscapes, including lush green hills, valleys, the flowing Kallada River, and towering rocks. Pattazhy also holds a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the 'Longest Bamboo.' The Pattazhy Devi Kshetra Samrakshana Samithi, established in 1971, has been instrumental in preserving the historic temple and its traditions while promoting the cultural, social, and spiritual development of the community. Pattazhy is a place of peace and tranquility, where the divine presence of Devi is deeply felt. The village offers a heavenly atmosphere, enriched by abundant flora and fauna, the soothing sounds of birds, and the musical symphony of the Kallada River, providing visitors with a truly celestial experience.
