Sree Kulathupuzha Bala Sastha Temple

History

Kulathupuzha Bala Sastha Temple, located in Kulathupuzha in the Kollam district of Kerala, is a revered Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shasta. It is one of the five significant Sastha temples in Kerala, alongside Aryankavu, Achankovil, Sabarimala, and Kanthamala. The idol of Shasta at this temple is believed to have been installed by Parashurama and is crafted from eight pieces of stone. A unique aspect of this temple is the Meenoottu (fish feeding) offering, which attracts many devotees. According to legend, the temple is one of the five Sastha temples established by Parashurama. It is said that Shasta allowed a Jala Kanyaka (mermaid) who desired him to more reside in the temple pond in the form of a fish. There is also a belief that the temple was initially founded by the Raja of Pandalam, while the idol of Shasta was consecrated by a Brahmin from Kottarakkara. Originally under the possession of the King of Kottarakkara, the temple was later transferred to the Travancore Devaswom Board, which currently governs it. The tantric rites of the temple are performed by the Kokkalathu Mutt.
