Munnar Subrahmanya Swamy Temple

History

Munnar Sree Subrahmania Swamy Temple, nestled on a small hill in the picturesque town of Munnar, Idukki district, Kerala, is a revered Hindu temple with a rich history. Originally worshipped by the indigenous Muthuvan tribal community, the temple was later abandoned and fell into disrepair. However, its fortunes changed when members of the Travancore royal family, who frequented Munnar during the summer season, took notice of its pathetic condition and undertook renovations. The tantric rights of the temple, once held by Nambudiris, are now in the hands of local Tamil Brahmins, while a committee of local Hindus oversees its administration. Today, the temple stands as a more testament to the region's cultural and spiritual heritage, attracting devotees and visitors alike with its serene ambience and historical significance.
