This famous Bhadrakali temple is at the Valanjambalam junction, one of the most important spots in Ernakulam. This temple is also known as Perumanoor Kavu. The main deity is Goddess Bhadrakali with Ganapathy, Ayyappan, Kunnariyath Bhagavathy, Nagas and Yogeeswaran as subordinate deities. Legend speaks of a Yogeeswaran coming with the brightness of the Goddess from the northwest of where the temple is today. He kept the Goddess at Nambyarkuruppath family near the temple and offered poojas. Later he consecrated it at the temple. Thus, the place where the devi is consecrated today is the third place where worship has been offered to her. The members of the Nambiyarkuruppath
more family gave the temple to the Cochin Royal family and it came to be under the VTK Estate. The Royal family handed over the temple to the Cochin Devaswom Board. Thus, the temple also had three owners. There is knowledge of how the festivals and poojas were conducted up to 250 years ago. In those days the devotees of the two localities Perumanoor Desam and Karithala Desam used to conduct the festival on alternate years with the permission of the VTK Estate. This was on the 21st and 22nd of the month of Dhanu. There have been many renovations carried out to bring the temple to its present position. It was after the renovation of 1998 that the flag post was erected and the festival conducted in the month of Makaram. Thalapoli is also conducted on star Bharani in the month of Kumbhom. Apart from that Lakshaarchana is conducted every year and Vinayaka Chaturthi is celebrated. On Aayilyam in the month of Thulam, Sarppabali is also conducted. The Kshethra Upadeshaka Samithy is actively involved in the running of the temple.
