Kodumthara Subrahmanya Temple

History

Kodumthara Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple is located in Pathanamthitta District, about 2.5 kilometres south of the district headquarters, along the banks of the Achankovil River. The temple was established by the Shakti Bhadras of the Chennirkara temple, who were Tamil kings. In the third or fourth century AD, the Shakti Bhadras migrated to Kerala and founded the Chennirkara Swaroop at Angadikal Kodumon. They brought the deities Sri Subramanya Swamy, Mahaganapati, Mahavishnu, Bhagavathi, and Bhadra Kali from their homeland. A dispute arose with the Swaroop regarding the temple's rights. Although the Chennirkara temples eventually agreed to relinquish their claims, the Namboothiris, the temple authorities, refused to grant Shakti more Bhadra the privileges he was entitled to. As a result, Shakti Bhadra was attacked by the Namboothiris, beaten, and thrown into the Achankovil River. When the Namboothiris later saw that Shakti Bhadra was prepared to wage war with his army, most of them, except those from Karavelimatham, fled. The Karanavars of Karavelimatham and the local Nair chiefs, seeking to avoid conflict, reconciled with Shakti Bhadra. As part of the settlement, Shakti Bhadra acquired half of the rights to the temple and half of the movable and immovable property, including the copper roof plate and the idols of Mahaganapati, Mahavishnu, and Bhagavathi. Shakti Bhadra then installed Lord Vishnu at Kodumon Vaikunthapuram, Bhagavathi at Kodumon Chilanthiyambalam, and Mahaganapati at Angadikkal near his Math.
