Thirumalida Maha Deva Temple

History

Thirumalida Swayambhoo Mahadeva Temple is a renowned temple in northern Kerala, dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located on the picturesque eastern bank of the Manimala River in Mallappally, Pathanamthitta District. The temple is easily accessible by road from Mallappally and nearby villages, about 15 kilometres from Thiruvalla. The nearest railway stations are Thiruvalla and Changanacherry. This temple is famous for its unique and mystical architecture, which resembles the renowned Kashi Vishwanath Temple. It is significant as the only Swayambhoo (self-manifested) temple facing west on the banks of a river. During the month of Karkidakam (July-August), thousands of pilgrims visit the temple to offer Karkkidaka Vavubali, a sacred more ritual for ancestors. One of the temple's most enchanting events is the celebration of Maha Shivaratri, which takes place on the sandy riverbed of the Manimala River when the water flow is at its lowest. Devotees from far and wide gather day and night to witness the Mallappally Kavadiyattam, a spectacular festival that includes caparisoned elephants, grand processions, mesmerizing drumbeats, and the Kavadi Thullal dance performed by devotees who have taken vows of sacrifice and thanksgiving to Lord Shiva. The temple's combination of spiritual significance, unique rituals, and scenic beauty makes it a cherished destination for devotees and visitors alike.
