Oorpazhachikavu Temple

History

Sree Oorpazhachi Kavu Temple is an ancient and revered temple located in Edakkad, approximately 12 kilometres from Kannur in Kerala. The temple is dedicated to three main deities: Goddess Bhagavathy, Sree Oorpazhachi Daivathar, and Vettakkorumakan, all enshrined within the inner sanctum. Additionally, there is a shrine dedicated to Thondachan at the Mele Kottam (upper citadel). The temple holds unique significance due to the coexistence of Shaiva and Vaishnava sanctums within the same complex. According to legend, the sage Vilwamangalam Swamiyar once visited Oorpazhachi Kavu. Because of his vow not to consume food from a Shaiva temple, he initially refrained from entering the premises. Instead, he bathed in the more temple pond and rested nearby. Later, two Brahmins approached him, informing him that the temple also had a Vaishnavite presence. Though sceptical, Swamiyar entered the temple and partook of food, after which the two Brahmins mysteriously disappeared. Astonished by this divine illusion, it is said that Swamiyar blessed the temple pond by throwing japicha mannu (blessed sand) into it. Worshippers believe that bathing in this pond has the power to cure diseases.
