Kilimarathukavu Siva Parvathy Temple is a Hindu
temple in Kadakkal, Kollam, Kerala. During the Pandavas' exile in the
forest, Arjuna travelled to perform penance for Lord Shiva to seek the
Pashupatastra. One day during his journey, he rested on a rock. As he continued
his journey after waking up, a bird flew around him, chirping. Intrigued by the
bird's call, Arjuna meditated. Upon awakening, he noticed the bird and decided
to follow it. The bird flew daily and eventually reached a valley, finally
settling on a tree as high as the sky, near a clear stream, which captured
Arjuna's attention. The bird perched on a
more
large tree called
"Kilimaram" and gazed at Arjuna. Arjuna sensed the bird communicating
that this was the place for his penance. The bird plucked three leaves from a
nearby "Koovalam" tree and placed them there. Feeling guided, Arjuna
began his penance for Lord Shiva. This place became known as "Kilimarathil
Kavu" and later "Kilimarathukavu." Arjuna bathed in a nearby
pond and worshipped the Shiva Lingam stone he found there. As his penance
intensified, Lord Shiva, urged by Parvati, approached Arjuna disguised as a
wild man, while Parvati appeared as a wild woman. Meanwhile, a monster sent by
Duryodhana to kill Arjuna appears to be a pig. Both Arjuna and the wild man (Lord
Shiva) attacked the pig with arrows. An argument ensued between Arjuna and the
wild man over who had struck the pig. Arjuna struck the wild man with his bow,
"Gandiva." Parvati intervened and revealed the wild man's true
identity as Lord Shiva. Realizing this, Arjuna performed a sashtanga namaskar,
and Lord Shiva bestowed upon him the Pashupatastra and his blessings. Deities
including Ganapathy, Murugan, Sastha, and Anjaneya requested to witness Lord
Shiva's form as the wild man. Finally, everyone gathered, and Lord Shiva told
Arjuna, "The place where we are now is very sacred, and whoever comes here
for prayer shall be blessed." After saying this, Lord Shiva disappeared,
and a Shivalingam manifested at that spot. Today, two Shivalingams are
worshipped at Kilimarathukavu Temple.
