Kakkad Sree Mahaganapathy Temple

History

This famous Mahaganapathi Temple is situated just one km. away from Kunnamkulam Bus stand, near the P.W.D. Rest House and Kunnamkulam Village office. This Temple is only 8 kms away from Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple. In 1921, Kakkad Karanawar, Manakulam Kunjunni Raja and his nephew Mukunda Raja and Mahakavi Vallathol jointly formed Kalamandalam and began the performance of Kathakali in this temple. Thus, the temple became famous in Kerala as well as outside. Mahaganapathi and Vettekaran are the Idols installed here. Both are equally powerful. So, the deities are given equal importance while performing poojas and offerings. The more trunk of the Ganapathi is turned to the left which is an important factor. This temple is one of the rare mahaganapathi temples of Kerala. The Kakkad Sree Mahaganapathi Temple is historically as famous as Kottarakara Edappally, Pazhavangadi, Ongallur and Kottakkal Mahaganapathi Temples. With the blessings of Sree Mahaganapathi and Vettekaran, the temple has become famous in the country. In 2002 the temple flag hoisting (Dwajaprathishta) was performed. In 2003, Sub-deities (Upadavathas) like Navagrahas, Nagas, Dampathirakshas, Durga, Bhadrakali etc. were also installed. Famous and well-known people are liberally donating money and land to this temple. With the blessings of Ganapathi, life of most of the devotees are advancing successfully with their expectation. Important offerings like Mahaganapathi Homam to remove all obstacles, Mangalya pooja to remove obstacles in marriage, Santhana Pooja for children and for the fulfillment of desires. Elephant tusk in gold is offered in place of ivory. Other important offerings are Niramala, Vettekaran Pattu, Udayasthamana Pooja, Koottappam, etc. Some other offerings are also performed. Reading of (Vayana) Ramayana Navahayajnam, Bhagavatha Sapthaham, Ganesha Puranam, Sivapuranam, etc. are also performed. There is Friday oottu on every first Friday of each Malayalam month on which food after Nivedyam is distributing to the devotees. Vinayaka Chathurthy of Chingamasam is celebrating with Ganesha Sangeethotsavam. On the first Saturday of January, Vettekaran pattu is performed along with the breaking of 12008 coconuts. After taking seat on coconuts, at 11.30 p.m,the Komaram starts throwing and breaking of coconuts and complete the breaking of 12008 coconuts in just 3½ hours. 8 days of Temple Festival (Utsavam) is celebrated every year starting with Flag Hoisting (Kodiyettam) on Thiruvathira Nakshathram in Malayalam Month of Meenam and concluding with the pallivetta on 7th day and Arattu on 8th day. Chakyarkoothu, Ottamthullal, Dance, Bhajans etc. are performed during these 8 days of festival. On next Sunday after Arattu the residents of Kakkad celebrate Deshappuram. The prathishta Day (Prathishtadinam) is celebrated on the Aswathi Nakshathram day of the Malayalam month Kumbham. Food is distributed to devotees (Prasada oottu) on prathishta day, Vinayaka Chathurthy, Vettekaran pattu and Temple Festival days. It is believed that persons who pray to Sree Ganapathi and Vettekaran for success before going to participate for a competition, will succeed in the competition. Visit this temple and do worship at least once and receive the blessings of Sree Mahaganapathi and Sree Vettekaran.
