This temple is in Kollam district, near the Ashtamudi lake, situated on the road leading to the north from Kadappakada. The ancient temple has Vanadurga with four arms consecrated in a square sanctum. As the Goddess is consecrated in the Vana Durga form, the top of the sanctum is left open to the skies. On the northwestern side of the temple is a well-preserved Kavu, the forest area dedicated to the Serpents. Ganapathy, Siva and Shaastha are consecrated facing the east. Brahmarakshas, Subrahmanya, Yakshi, Yogeeshwaran, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi and Madan Thampuran are also worshipped as subordinate deities. The ancient banyan tree in front of the temple and the
more many tired brass lamps offered by the Kaaryakkar of the Palace add to the grandeur of the temple. Legend says how a Brahmin, while travelling south in a boat from Malabar was caught in a storm when he reached Kollam. He prayed to the Goddess whom he worshipped and was miraculously saved. He got down and saw the presence of a snake in the forest and consecrated the Goddess there. Four Nair families in the area co-operated with him in the construction. Later the Brahmin left for his home, leaving the temple in the hands of the Nair families. Today it is managed by the NSS Karayogam. A complete reconstruction of the old temple structure is going on.
