Aadhiparashakthi Devi Temple Thoniplavila

History

This temple is at Thoniplavila near Chirakulam in Neyyattinkara, Thiruvananthapuram. Sree Kalluvila Podiyan belonged to the Ayyanavar community. He was killed in the firing against those who were agitating for the country’s freedom in August 1938 at Neyyattinkara. This place was the Vrindavan Estate belonging to the Travancore Royal family at the time of Sree Chithira Thirunal Bala Rama Varma. As water entered the estate grounds very often, the Royal family members used to play in it with boats made from the jackfruit trees here. That is how the place came to be known as Thoniplavila.  Then his eldest son, Madhavan kept the idol of Sree Bhadrakali more and some other fierce powers whom his father had been worshipping under an old jackfruit tree with a huge hole in its trunk at Panangattukari. Later they were transferred to the Ooruttukala Bhagavathy temple. He used to collect medicinal plants from the Agasthyar Kootam mountains, prepare medicines and distribute them among the devotees with the blessings of this Devi. After some time an idol of Goddess Mahabhadrakali came up as a self-originated form in the prayer room of Sri.Madhavan’s house.  His third son Sri.Thampi Swami, with the blessing of Aadideva Guru Sree Parabrahma Bhairave Swamigal, used to give advice and instructions to the devotees who came to the temple. He would also distribute the hot Pongala prepared by the devotees with his bare hands. As the number of devotees increased, they decided to make a temple for convenience. So in 1966, under the leadership of M.Raveendran, the youngest son of Sri. Madhavan, a committee was formed of the local people and a temple was constructed in the place of the house.  As astrological consultations indicated the presence of Sree Durgadevi, this Goddess was also consecrated in this temple with equal importance.  But the idol of Bhadrakali grew as a self-originated form in the temple thus leading to the presence of two consecrations. Navagrahas, Sree Bhairava Swamy, Sree Ganapathy, Sree Bhoothathaan, Sree Manthramoorthi, Sree Thampuran and Sree Nagar were consecrated as subordinate deities. Later some renovation and re-consecrations were done to these deities. Sree Jayendra Saraswathy Swamigal, head of Kanchi Kamakoti Madom and his successor Sree Sree Shankara Vijendra Saraswathy Swami have worshipped at this temple, on coming to know of the power of the consecrations here.
