Cherpu Bhagavathy temple at Cherpu in Trichur district, is one of the 108 Durgalayas (temples of Goddess Durga) established by Parasurama and considered to be the greatest among them. This temple is the venue for the 2000-year-old Peruvanam Pooram and the leading participant in the Aaraattupuzha pooram. The temple has been the centre of Yajurveda for hundreds of years and the Othuttu, held in the temple, is second only to the Murajapam held at the Sree Padmanabha Swamy temple at Thiruvananthapuram. The temple is controlled by the families of five Ooraalans.
