The serene landscape of Kurichithanam owes its spiritual energy to the holy shrine of Poothrukkovil Temple, an ancient pilgrimage centre in the Kottayam district. This temple is among the rarest where the supreme deity, Lord Krishna, along with his consort Rukmini, faces west. The divine purpose, or "devasankalpam," is "Kuchelasadgathi." The deity is believed to share a divine bond with Vigneshwara, who resides adjacent to the sanctum sanctorum. Additionally, the presence of Durga and Maheswara can be found in the “Upadevasthanam” within the temple premises. The northwest corner inside the temple wall is occupied by “Nagadevathas” and “Yakshi amma.” Special rituals are performed on Rohini and Thiruvonam days.
more Major offerings include Udyasthamana Pooja, Thiruvoanam Pooja, Palppayasam, and Neyvilakku. Each year, the Ashtami Rohini is celebrated with great vigour. The inaugural session and the silver jubilee session of “The Akhila Bharatha Sreemad Bhagavatha Sathram” were conducted at this holy site in 1983 and 2007, respectively. The most auspicious day here is the grand festival of “Ekadasivilakku,” celebrated on the day of Guruvayoor Ekadasi in Vrishchikam. Special poojas are performed with utmost devotion, drawing devotees from far and wide to participate in the Dashavatharam Chandanam Charth and Ekadashi Maholtsavam. The temple also has a significant contribution to education. A vast area of land was dedicated to founding Sree Krishna Vocational Higher Secondary School in 1946. Temple authorities have made great efforts to develop this institution, ensuring the best faculty and quality education for all children. Moon Stone (Chandrakantham) pendants, properly sanctified and energized through divine rituals and mantras, are available by prior booking.
