Velorvattom Sree Mahadevar Temple

History

The Velorvattom Sree Mahadevar Temple, situated 2 km to the west of Cherthala town, is one of the ancient Siva temples in South India. The temple is believed to be thousands of years old and the Lord is considered as the Karanathan (Lord of the land).  The idol of Vadakkanappan is believed to have been consecrated by Vilwamangalath Swamiyar. The idol in the Thekkinakam is self-originated. Both the idols are in the form of Linga, which is one of the unique features of this temple. As per legends this temple is connected with the Azhvanchery Thamprakkal as well as the Vaikkam Mahadevar Temple. That is how more this temple came to have two consecrations of Lord Shiva. The temple has also got the unique feature of having two Sanctum Sanctorums within the same Chuttambalam. The temple displays the ancient architectural glory and sculptures. This has been renovated using the traditional architectural style for temples. The two Sanctum Sanctorums face the East. The sanctum of Vadakkanappan is round in shape thereby showing the antiquity of the construction. Yakshiyamma is consecrated facing the West. Along with Mahadeva who is believed to be in the form of Mruthyunjaya and always ready to bless his devotees, are consecrated Ganapathy, Dharma Sastha, Maha Vishnu and the Nagas as sub-deities. Arukola and Brahmarakshas have also been consecrated here. Sivarathri is celebrated as the major festival. Apart from that, the day of star Ayilyam in the month of Thulam and Pathamudayam are also celebrated with various rituals.  The most prominent offerings are 1001 Kudam Jalabhishekam and Saisyam. Other offerings include Sivadhara, Kinattukara Thalichukuda, Yakshidhara, Ellu for Dharma Sastha, Palpayasam, Arukoladaham and Swayamvara Pushpanjalai. Almost 80% of the Malayalee families consider Velorvattom Mahadevar as their ancestral deity. Therefore, people from all over Kerala, irrespective of their caste, come to worship in this temple
