Sree Thevarkunnu Siva Temple, located in the Manganam Village of Kottayam District in Kerala, is one of the few Swayambhoo (self-manifested) Siva temples in the state. Believed to be around 1,000 years old, this temple is dedicated to Lord Siva, who is worshipped here along with his consort, Goddess Parvathy. The temple's name derives from local slang, with Thevaru referring to the deity and Kunnu meaning hill in Malayalam, thus forming Thevar Kunnu Swayambhoo Siva Temple. The legend surrounding the temple's origin is both fascinating and divine. It is said that a tribal woman was searching for arrowroot on the western side of Plappally Illam, a local more Brahmin household, using an iron rod. When the rod struck a stone, it started to bleed, and the woman felt a divine presence. Believing this stone to be sacred, she informed the people of Plappally Illam and then disappeared into the nearby river. It is thought that this tribal woman was an incarnation of Goddess Parvathy, who revealed the presence of the divine stone to the villagers. In honour of this legend, the tribal woman is also worshipped as a goddess on the eastern side of the temple. Over the centuries, the temple's structure had aged and was in dire need of renovation. The devotees, along with the Plappally Illam, have been actively involved in refurbishing the temple, aiming to transform it into a Poornakaya Maha Kshethram - a fully structured grand temple according to Vedic norms. The renovation is ongoing, and the temple trust seeks financial and physical support from devotees to complete the project. The successful transformation of the temple is believed to bring prosperity to the devotees and the entire Manganam region. The main deities, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy, are worshipped here in a pleasant and serene form. It is widely believed that worshipping them at this temple helps remove obstacles in marriage and ensures a suitable and harmonious partnership. This aspect of the temple draws many devotees seeking blessings for their marital life. The temple complex, with its unique history and divine presence, stands as a beacon of faith and devotion. The temple trust appeals to all devotees to participate and support the ongoing renovations and upgrades, ensuring that Sree Thevarkunnu Siva Temple continues to be a place of spiritual solace and divine blessings for generations to come.
