Sree Malsyaavathaara Mahavishnu Temple is at Meenangadi in Wayanadu District, on the side of the Kozhikode Mysore National Highway. The first incarnation of Maha Vishnu as Matsya, Fish, is consecrated here. This is the only temple in Kerala with such a consecration. Hence it is very famous among devotees. Legend says that an ascetic came to this place around 500 years ago. He went to the pond to have a bath. In the water, he saw a fish coming to the surface and going down again and again. Sensing the presence of Malsya Moorthy there, he brought an idol Maha Vishnu from a nearby compound. He
more consecrated it as Malsya Moorthy, facing east, on the western side of the pond. The name Meenangadi is derived from the description of the place where the fish, Meen, in Malayalam, was playing.
