This temple is at Thatta in Adoor thaluk of Pathanamthitta District. The temple is believed to be more than 1600 years old. The fierce Sree Bhadrakali and the benign Baalabhadra Devi are consecrated in the same sanctum facing north. It is believed that the idol consecrated here was worshipped by an ascetic. This area was overgrown with vegetation at that time. The idol remained here after the death of the ascetic. Later a woman went to collect fodder for her cattle in the forest. As she sharpened her sickle on a stone, blood started oozing out. The frightened woman informed a Nair family about it. The head
more of that family built a small structure with thatched covering on one side and consecrated the idol there. A temple was built for the Goddess later. The Goddess was worshipped in her fierce form with rituals suitable for that. When it was no longer possible to offer that type of ritual, another stone idol, invoked as the benign Goddess was consecrated in front of the first idol. As the Goddess was consecrated first in a place with thatch only on one side, the place came to be known as Oripurathu.
