Vadukunda Siva Temple

History

Madai Vadukunda Shiva Temple is believed to have been constructed by the "Kolathiri" kings during the medieval period on a plateau known as "Madai Para" in Madai Village, Kannur Taluk, in the Kannur District of Kerala. It is located 22 km north of Kannur, the district headquarters. The Kolathiri Kingdom is a branch of the ancient Mooshaka Dynasty, which ruled the Ezhimala empire from the 5th to the 8th century. About 1200 years ago, a branch of this dynasty migrated and settled in Madai, then an important port and trading centre situated 4 km south of Ezhimala. They built castles and temples, establishing their headquarters on Madai more Para, a significant plateau approximately 150 feet above sea level with visibility extending 20 km in all directions. The Sree Vadukunda Shiva Temple was constructed in the southwest corner of Madai Para at a holy spot believed to be imbued with the divine power of the "Swayambhoo" of Lord Shiva.
