Thiruvenkidapuram Sree Mahavishnu Temple

History

Thiruvenkidapuram Sree Mahavishnu Temple, one of the fastest-growing temples in central Travancore, is located in Vazhappally, north of Changanassery town, about 400 meters east of the renowned Vazhappally Sri Mahadevar Temple. This temple, dedicated to Parasurama and facing west towards Sri Mahadevan, is managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board. The temple and its adjoining lands, which had been in ruins for centuries, were taken over by the Kerala Temple Preservation Committee and renovated in 1996. The blessings of Thiruvenkatapuresan have been experienced by many devotees, leading to an increasing number of visitors to this sacred site. The idol of Sri more Thiruvenkidapuresan, worshipped by foreign Brahmins in ancient times, resembles Chaturbahu and Sri Guruvayoorappan, holding Shankha Chakragadapadmadhari, but is revered in the concept of Tirupati Venkatachalapathy. This has popularized the names Thiruvenkidapuram and Thiruvenkidapuresan. Historically, the temple came under the control of the Thekkumkur dynasty and flourished. It is believed that a king from the Chembakassery family purchased the temple from the Thekkumkoor king and gifted it to the Thiruvenkidapuram Varyam as Gurudakshina. Over time, the temple was inherited by former residents from Manikandhapuram. A fire later destroyed all the temple walls except for the five-storied floor of the shrine and the mandapam, leading to the removal of the temple lights. However, on April 22, 1996, the deities of Lord Vishnu and his sub-deities were celebrated under the star Makairam. The main festival is the Dedication Day at the Makairam Nakshatra in Medam. The temple is also renowned for its continuous performances of Krishnanattam, by Guruvayoor Kshetrakalanilayam, from the first dedication day. The sight of the radiant and beautiful idol of Thiruvenkatapuresa during Deeparadhana evokes profound devotion and self-consciousness in the devotee, creating an indescribable spiritual experience akin to the direct vision of Yogeshwara Vaikundanathan.
