History

Located near Kalathoor, 750 meters from Ettumanoor Kanakkari in Kottayam, Aruvikkal Sree Shiva Subrahmanya Swamy Temple is a serene sanctuary dedicated to Lord Parameswaran and Lord Subramanian within the same compound. This picturesque temple blends harmoniously with its natural surroundings, making it a must-visit for those who appreciate ancient architecture, nature, and sacred spaces. The temple grounds are steeped in culture and beauty, with recent renovations enhancing its scenic appeal. It is said that the river Ganga flows in front of Mahadevan’s Thirunada, adding to the temple's mystical charm. The temple's origin is rooted in legend. It is believed that more the Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple and its surroundings were deserted for a long time due to the curse of Loma Maharshi. Later, Sri Vilvamangalath Swamiyar, during his travels, arrived at Ettumanoor, felt the divine presence of Shiva, and resumed worship. The Kalathoor Shiva Temple is said to have been built during this period when the Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple was abandoned. Over time, the cave entrance to the original temple was closed, leading to the construction of the present structure.
