This ancient temple is situated 5 km away from Perumbavoor town in Ernakulam district. It is believed to be more than 1300 years old. Legends say that Vamana Moorthy gave salvation to Mahabali at this place. According to popular belief, the place was known as Padampilly, where Vamana Moorthy put his padam, foot, on the ground. It later became Mathampilly. Jagad Guru Shankaracharya used to worship at this temple. It is close to the Chelamittam Mahavishnu temple which is famous for offering oblations to the departed ancestors. When this temple was reduced to ruins, the Chelamittam temple owners took over the management of this temple and
more brought it back to glory.
