Mattalil Bhagavathy Temple

History

Mattalil Bhagavathy Temple, located at Kadavanthra in Ernakulam, is a renowned place of worship on K.P. Vallon Road near the Kadavanthra junction. The temple is dedicated to the Goddess Aadi Parashakthi and has been a spiritual centre for many generations. Devotees come here seeking blessings for marriage, childbirth, and the removal of life's adversities. In 1921, Sree Narayana Guru Devan visited Chilavanoor near this location. Chingaanezhath Krishnan Vaidyan, a prominent local, lamented the lack of a temple for the community. Guru Devan, along with notable figures such as Muttathil Konnunni Vaidyan, Thitunnayil Kochukrishnan Vaidyan, Mattalil Appu Vaidyan, and Pulpayyaatahth Ayappan, more identified a site for the temple. This land belonged to the ancient Chruparambath family. Guru Devan declared that a temple would be built there, leading to the establishment of the Mattalil Bhagavathy Temple. The temple's annual festival is celebrated over five days from Chathayam to Aswathy in the Malayalam month of Kumbham. During this period, many nilakavadis and pookavadis visited the temple from different areas. The consecration day is celebrated on the star Makam in the month of Edavam, featuring Kalamezhuthum pattum, Mudiyattam, Pongala, and food distribution. In the month of Karkidakam, the temple conducts Ganapathy Homam, Bhagavathseva, and Sreemad Devi Bhagavatha Navaha Yajnam. Monthly, on the star Makam, food distribution is organized. The temple also holds an Aiswarya Pooja on the first of every Malayalam month, Sahasranaama Archana every Tuesday and Friday, and special prayers on the day of the star Chathayam.
