Adukkath Bhagavathy Temple, dedicated to Shakti, is located in Kasargod, Kerala, India. The main deity of this temple is the Goddess Kannaki (Parvathi). According to mythology, Kannaki was married to Kovalan, the son of a wealthy merchant. However, after their marriage, Kovalan became infatuated with a dancer and squandered all his wealth on her, neglecting his wife. When he was finally penniless, he returned to Kannaki. The only valuable possession left was Kannaki's pair of anklets, which they decided to sell. They went to the king of Madurai to sell the anklets. Unfortunately, one of the Queen’s anklets, which resembled Kannaki's, had been stolen. When Kovalan tried
more to sell Kannaki's anklet, he was mistaken for the thief and was executed by the king's soldiers. Enraged by this injustice, Kannaki confronted the king with the remaining anklet. She broke it open, revealing rubies inside, unlike the Queen's anklets which contained pearls. She then cursed the city of Madurai, and her chastity and righteousness made the curse come true. Kannaki is believed to have attained salvation when the Goddess of the city appeared before her. On her journey to Kodungalloor, Kannaki is said to have passed through Attukal, where she took the form of a little girl. An old man sitting by a stream encountered the girl, who asked for his help to cross the stream. Puzzled to see the young girl alone, he took her to his home, but she vanished. That night, she appeared in his dream and asked him to build a temple at the spot where he would find three golden lines in his grove. Following her instructions, the old man built the temple, which is believed to be the present Attukal Temple.
