Nedungattu Shathrughna Swamy Temple

History

Nedungattu Shathrughna Swamy Temple is steeped in ancient legend. When Lord Rama left Ayodhya for his forest exile (Vanavaasa), his brothers Bharatha and Shatrughna ventured into the forest to find him. During their search, they got separated, and Lord Shatrughna found himself trapped in a dense forest. The local inhabitants, encountering Shatrughna, referred to him as "Nedum Kaattu Thever," which evolved into "Nedungaattu Thevar." Originally, the temple dedicated to Lord Shatrughna was situated in Mammalassery. However, due to difficulties in maintaining the temple, the owner, Nakarakkattu Mana of Mammalassery, decided to relocate it. This relocation brought misfortune and unrest to the area; people experienced tension and conflict without more apparent reasons. A Devaprasnam, a traditional astrological inquiry, was conducted to uncover the source of these troubles. It revealed that the divine presence (Deva Chaithanyam) had not transferred with the idol. In response, the Shatrughna Swamy Temple was reconstructed at its original location using the same materials, and this process is nearing completion. The temple is currently owned and maintained by the Sri Shatrugnaswami Kshethra Samrakshana Trust in Mammalassery. The Nedungattu Shathrughna Swamy Temple continues to be a beacon of spiritual significance, preserving its rich heritage and offering solace and blessings to the devotees who visit.
