Panniyankara Sree Durga Bhagavathi Temple in Kozhikode predates the city itself, standing as a testament to the architectural brilliance of the 11th and 12th centuries AD. Located in Kozhikode, Kerala, with its post office at Kallai, this temple is known as Kozhikode Muringath Sree Bhagavathi Kshethram Panniyankara. Dedicated to the Mother Goddess, the temple houses the divine powers of Durga Devi, while another form of the goddess, Bhadrakali Devi, is currently worshipped. To preserve the temple from further decay, a dedicated committee of Panniyankara residents undertook its renovation. As one of the 108 Durga temples in Kerala, this temple features
more Durga in a standing posture, embodying peaceful yet powerful divine energy, creating a perfect atmosphere for worship. The temple is also historically linked to Parashurama. The exact origins of the temple remain unknown, as no reliable historical records exist. However, during renovation, ancient inscriptions from the Perumal dynasty were discovered, shedding light on its historical significance. These stone relics, dating back thousands of years, highlight the temple’s enduring magnificence and historical fame. Further supporting this historical context, a Deva Prashna (astrological inquiry) conducted at the temple revealed that Goddess Durga has been present in this sacred space for over 4,500 years.
