The temple is situated at Valanchuzhy, in Pathanamthitta district. This temple is as old as the time of Ramayana. The idol of Lord Siva, consecrated by Lord Rama is seen in the temple on the Chuttippara. It is believed that Sree Rama lived here during his banishment to the forest with Sita and Lakshmana. They stayed in a cave and there is a spring that never goes dry which exists to the present day. There is a rock where the marks left by Sita Devi spreading her clothes to dry are evident. This place is called Chela Viricha para. Just above that there are two parallel lines on
more the rock, believed to have been made by the wheels of the Pushpaka Vimanam when it landed there. These lines are in a straight line with Jatayu Para at Chadayamangalam. Sabari’s hermitage where Rama and Lakshmana went while wandering in search of Sita is believed to be at Sabarimala. Names like Seetha Thodu, and Gurunathan Mannu also point to the events in the Ramayana.
