Mannancherry Thrikkovil Mahadeva Temple

History

This temple stands at Mannancherry, on Alapuzha – Thanneermukkam road.  The temple is believed to be more than 800 years old. There are two sancta in the same temple precincts with Mahadeva consecrated in both as Vadakkanappan and Thekkanappan. Legends say that the idol of Thekkanappan was self-originated while the idol of Vadakkanappan was brought from Thrikkannaapuram and consecrated here.  Another legend speaks about a Siva temple to the north of Kodungalloor named Thrikkannaa Mathilakam.  Once when the sea eroded the land, the temple was washed away. Years later a Shivalinga came ashore at Kattoor near Mararikulam. Some Brahmins from Mannancherry reached there and brought the idol to more this temple and consecrated it as Vadakkanappan. Thekkanappan is visualized to be in meditation while Vadakappan is in a pleasant mood. There are two thidappallyis (kitchens) for the two sancta. There were beautiful sculptures on both the Sancta but now only a few on the southern sanctum remain today. The other structures that speak of the glory of the temple in ancient times still exist here. The ownership of the temple was vested in the Chirakkattu family, which was closely associated with the royal family. Ganapathy, Dharm Shastha, Sarppam, Yakshi, and Rakshass are the subordinate deities. There is a huge pond in front of the temple. A canal connects it to the Vembanad lake so that there will be enough water in summer and the water will not enter the temple during the rainy season. When boats were the main mode of transport, there was a jetty and a path that lead from there to the temple for the use of those who came to worship there.
