Aazhimala Shiva Temple

History

Azhimala Siva Temple, nestled near the Poovar-Vizhinjam road in Thiruvananthapuram, boasts the tallest Shiva statue in Kerala. Tracing its origins back to the 8th century AD, during the reign of the Pandya dynasty, this temple holds immense historical significance. It is a pivotal hub of Shaivism, a sect of Hinduism venerating Lord Shiva as the supreme deity. The towering Gangadhareshwara Statue, also known as the Aazhimala Siva Statue, stands at an impressive height of 52 feet, sculpted by the skilled hands of P.S. Devadathan. Commissioned by the Pulinkudi Azhimala Shiva Temple Devaswom Trust, this masterpiece was unveiled on December 31, 2021, after six years of meticulous more construction. Depicting Lord Shiva cradling the goddess Ganga in his locks, the statue's intricate details and three-dimensional form captivate nature enthusiasts and pilgrims alike. Beyond its architectural marvels, Azhimala captivates visitors with its picturesque hilltop setting, enveloped by lush forests, offering breathtaking vistas of the sea and nearby villages. The temple's serene ambience is further enhanced by the presence of the tranquil 'Sivaganga' pond nearby. Inside the sanctum sanctorum, intricate carvings and vibrant paintings narrate tales from Hindu mythology, adding to the temple's allure.
