Poozhanadu Sree Chamundi Devi Temple

History

The area at the foothills of Agasthyarkootam, which has been sanctified by the presence of Sage Agasthya had many rivers flowing through it. It was also culturally advanced, and a place where many rituals were conducted. As many rivers flowed through that area the place came to be known as Puzhanadu, (the land of rivers) which later became Poozhanadu. In those days’ bulls were used for tilling the field, drawing carts to carry goods as well as for the elderly people of noble families to travel. The elder members used to go to Valiyela beyond Kontimala in Tamil Nadu to buy the bulls.  Once they more were staying the night to the west of Inchikutti madom. During the night they heard a strange loud noise. On enquiry, they saw a poojari in frenzy in a temporary sanctum made with green leaves of the coconut tree.  The local people were offering pooja to their Goddess Chamundi. Impressed by the offering made there, the elderly member said that if the Goddess would come with them to their place, she would be offered pooja in a temple.  The next morning, as they were proceeding to buy the bulls, they met an old woman who directed them to a house. They were able to get good bulls from there. That evening they decided to rest at Panayarathala. That night they were woken up by a loud noise and saw one of the bulls lying a few feet away from where it had been tethered. At the advice of the local people, try to make an astrological consultation to unravel the mystery. The astrologer found the presence of Chamundi Devi and advised them to offer pooja. They did that and later constructed a temple there. When they reached home they saw the Goddess in a dream telling them that she had come with them as they had promised to consecrate her in a temple. A structure made of coconut fronds was first made for the pooja to be performed. A pond was made for the Goddess and steps to reach the temple were also constructed. This came to be known as Puthuveettil Thekath Temple. Later members of the Naakkalampattu family donated land for the construction of the temple. First, the temple was made with mud and later with planks of wood. In 1960 a temple and a tree for the retinue of the Goddess were erected. The tree is still there in the temple compound. The temple as it exists today was constructed and the Goddess was consecrated in 2001.
