Agasthyacodu Mahadeva Temple

History

This is one of the most famous Siva temples of Kerala situated about 5km to the east of Anchal in the Kollam district.  In the ancient times, there was an idol lying face down in the sanctum. It was believed to be that of Sage Agasthya. It is because of this that the place came to be known as Agasthyacodu. Legends describe how Sage Agasthya travelled to the southern parts of India as instructed by Lord Siva. When he reached the place where the temple stands today, all the wild animals left the place. The sage built a hermitage there and stayed that. It more is in that place that the temple was built. Mahadeva and Mahavishnu are consecrated here in separate sancta with equal importance. The poojas offered to both the deities are also the same. The tallest statue of Lord Siva in Kerala is at this temple.
