Kozha Sree Narasimha Swami Temple

History

Kozha Sree Narasimha Swami Temple is renowned for housing what is believed to be Narasimha's only swayambhu (self-manifested) idol in Kerala. Until around 1752 CE, Kozha was largely uninhabited and forested, part of the Vadakkumkoor principality. Legend has it that a vanavedan (jungle-dwelling hunter) discovered the idol of Lord Narasimha in the dense woods of present-day Kozha. With the blessings of local authorities, the idol was consecrated by the locals, gradually developing into a full-fledged shrine. Some believe that the hunter was not an ordinary mortal but an incarnation of the Hindu god Shiva. This belief is supported by the proximity of the Vettakkarumakan temple, dedicated more to the son of Shiva and Parvathy, near the Narasimhaswami temple. The region has historically been Shaivaite, with few Vishnu/Krishna temples indicating a later Vaishnavite influence. The presence of both Shaivaite and Vaishnavite elements in the area underscores the rich, intertwined religious history of the Kozha region.
