This is one of the most famous temples of Valluvanadu, an ancient kingdom of the present central Kerala. There is a legend about the consecration of the goddess at this temple. There was a brahmin residence near the Thirumandhaamkunnu, named Mozikunnathumana. One devotee who used to worship the Goddess every Monday found it difficult to make the trip to the temple and thought that he would now remain at home and pray to the goddess. When he reached the Siva temple near his house, he took bath in the temple pond. But on coming out he found that he could

not lift his umbrella that he had left near the pond. He understood that the goddess had followed him and started offering pujas at that place. Once there was a fight among the family members of this brahmin house and one of the men took a trident and absorbed the power of the goddess into it. Then he fixed the trident under a banyan tree. In his anger he asked the goddess to be satisfied by the sand and the dry leaves. But the people around that started worshipping the goddess there. When the old banyan tree was destroyed, a new one came up on the same spot. The goddess then came to be known as the Putenalkkal Bhagavathy (Goddess at the new banyan tree). The old trident was also replaced by a new one. The people could offer only some rice but the goddess was satisfied with that. The custom of offering rice on the last day of the Malayalam month of Makaram is still continued.
