This temple at Mayyazhi is important historically and on account of the legend connected with it. The legends about this temple came to be established when historical documents and some idols from the temple pond were found under the ground. When the temple pond was cleaned in 1972, four stone idols of great artistic beauty were obtained from it. In a brass pot that lay buried in the temple compound, some gold coins, the ornaments for the thiamin dance and some Roman coins were discovered. While the renovation work of the temple was going on in 1982, two stones with writings in an ancient script
more (vattezhuth) were found. These stones are 1775 years old. It has been scientifically proved that these stones with the writings belong to the 12th year of the rule of Indukotha who ruled the land from Kodungaloor. The Chirakkal Royal family managed the temple till May 1971. Then the local people formed a Subrahmanya Seva Samithy and took over the temple from the royal family. The ancient mural paintings on the sanctum walls were destroyed when the renovation work was going on.
