Vattakkeril Sree Ghandakarna Temple

History

This is one of the few temples where Ghandakarnan is consecrated with Goddess Bhadrakali. This temple is on the banks of Kaithapuzha Lake and holds an important place in the history of Travancore. The temple is believed to be around 800 years old. There is a well-known legend about Ghandakarna consecrated here. In Ezhikkara in the north of Kerala, a Namboothiri woman worshipped Ghandakarna with great devotion. As this woman had fallen in love with the Variyer who worked in the temple, she was banished from her house. To protect his devotee Ghandakarna also went with her. When they reached Aroor, the head of the more family of Vattakeril, who was also a magician, gave them a place to live and all the conveniences of performing the poojas. Before the Namboothiri woman died she consecrated Ghandakarnan with the Goddess. There is a legend connected with the temple getting the name Vattakeri. The king of Travancore had come to Arookutty, on the border between the Travancore and Kochi states. This Nambootihri woman went to meet the Maharaja with some gold in a basket made of palm leaf and requested permission to build a temple for Ghandakarna at the place where she lived. The King gave her the land where the temple stands today as well as many acres of land around it.  As the woman was not sure of the name of the place, the King called it Vattakeri as she had brought gold in a vatti (Basket). The temple has been renovated later without changing the nature of the first structure.
