Pundareekapuram Temple stands
as one of Kerala's renowned Sri Krishna sanctuaries. Positioned atop Mittayi
Kunnu, reaching the shrine entails ascending nearly 50 steps. According to the
temple's Dhanya Shloka, the murti depicts the Vishwaroopam of Sri Krishna,
symbolizing his return with Sathyabama after defeating the demon
Narakasura. The primary deity revered here is the Vishwaroopam form of Sri
Krishna, characterized by its Agra bhavan, a rarity as Sri Krishna is typically
worshipped in a tranquil state. Even the Garuda idol within the temple exudes a
similar fierce aspect. Dating back to before the 13th century AD, the temple's
origin myth narrates how an elder from the Venimangalam
more
Illam stumbled upon the
sacred murti while bathing in the Muvattupuzha River. Entranced by its power,
he transported it to his Illam, intending to construct a temple for worship.
However, Sri Krishna appeared in his dream, expressing a desire not to be
confined to a single location. Thus, the Venimangulam Illam was transformed
into a temple, serving as the divine abode of Sri Krishna.
