Parampathukulangara Mahakshetram

History

In southern Kerala the Pavumbakali Temple is famous. It is also known as Parampathu Kulangara Mahakshetram.  It is one of the rare temples where there is ‘Shadadhara Prathishta’. Kirata Moorthy Sree Parameswaran, Annapoorneswari Sree Parvathy and Pavumbakali ‘the Abhishtta Varadayini’ are the main deities. But the temple became famous because of Pavumbakali. People from very faraway places belonging to other religions also visit this temple to remove Kali Dosham. Other than the ordinary offerings of the temple, in order to get rid of Kali Dosha ‘Kongi, Pattu, Karivala, Chicken, Seed, Adukku’ etc are offered. The temple is situated in Kollam more dist., Karunagappally taluk and Manapally north. There is a legend connected with the fame of the temple which is still believed. The Brahim boy who performed pooja in the temple and a girl belonging to the Kurava community fell in love. Because of the caste system the Brahmin boys’ relatives opposed the relationship. The girl became pregnant and due to the cruel treatment, the Brahmin boy committed suicide. The girl was not able to lead a peaceful life in her native place so she went away and committed suicide by cutting her head with a sickle. After her death she took the fierce form of Kali and the people believe that she has taken a place in the Brahmin boys ‘Paradevata’ temple. Other than the main deities there is Ganapathi, Sastha, Naga Raja, Nagayakshi, Madan, Yakshi and Kali Devi’s relative ‘Kallelil Appupan’ are also there. For centuries this temple was in ruins. The devotees took initiative and reconstructed the temple. In 1987 they performed the Punarprathishta. The Dhwajapratishta was performed and the Chuttambalam reconstructed.  Beautiful paintings adorn the Chuttambalam.  People visit the temple to admire the sculpture representing ancient stories of Puranas. There are two Dhwaja stambhas (pillars for the temple flag). The Thantri of this temple belongs to Pullamvazhi Illam of Haripad.  The Administration of the temple is conducted by 15 members.  They belong to north Manapally and South manapally. They remain in office for 3 years.  People come here on Sundays, Tuesday and Fridays, the important days of the temple. They come to get relief from their sorrows and for ‘Papapariharam’ (removal of sins). From NH 47 via Vavvakavu 7 kms.
