Thrippalamunda Mahadeva Temple

History

This temple is at Thrippalamunda village in Kongad in Palaghat district.  The main deity is a self-originated Lord Siva with Parvathy.  The sanctum which has the presence of Ganga, faces the west. At one time the temple was under Naduvil Madom Mooppil Swamiyar. Now it is under a Trustee Board of the Malabar Devaswom Board. It is one of the oldest Siva temples in Valluvanadu. Legend says that a woman was cutting grass in the field and sharpened her sickle on a stone. As she sharpened her sickle, blood started oozing from the stone and she spat on it. A voice said, ‘Thuppalle munde’ (do not more spit), The frightened woman ran from there and wherever she ran came to be called Thuppallamunda and later Thrippalamunda. As the effulgence of Siva was seen on the stone, the temple was built there.  The temple stands in the field even today. Water is present in the sanctum. According to some, it is the presence of the water in the sanctum that led to the name Thrippalamunda. There is also a well near the sanctum that never goes dry and the water rises so high that it can be drawn with the hand. The small channel that flows through the temple compound also never gets dry.  There are three ponds also in the compound. When the temple was under the Mooppil Swamiyaar, he used to stay at the temple for four months from Karkidakam to Thulam of the Malayalam era in certain years. The remains of eight Swamiyars who attained heaven while staying here can be seen here. This was one of the richest temples in Malabar at one time.
