Pallikkurupp Mahavishnu Temple

History

This temple is at village Palliurupp in Palaghat district.  It is believed that Lord Sree Rama slept here during his stay in the forest and hence the name Pallikurupp was attached to the place. The temple is centuries old and has the attraction of antiquity and architectural excellence. According to a legend, it had been predicted by astrologers that a peacock would be present at the time of the consecration. As the priests finished the rituals of the consecration and were waiting for the peacock, an ascetic arrived there carrying a bunch of peacock feathers. The priests assumed that the feathers could be taken as the sign more instead of the peacock and consecrated Maha Vishnu facing the west.  A peacock flew around slightly to the south of the first consecration and the priests consecrated Maha Vishnu as Narasimha Moorthy there. This is the Thekkan Thevar that is seen there today. To reduce the ferocity of Narasimhamoorthy, Lord Ayyappa was consecrated directly opposite to that facing the east. Lord Ayyappa with Poorna and Pushkala is consecrated open to the skies under a jackfruit tree.
