Located in Velur, Vengilassery area of Thalappilly Taluk, within the ancient principality of Chengazhikode, the Kurooramma Sreekrishna Temple stands as a testament to devotion and legend. Nestled 7 kilometres east of Kechery on the Thrissur - Kunnamkulam Highway, 5 kilometres south of Erumapetty on the Wadakkanchery - Kunnamkulam Highway, and 10 kilometres west from Kuranchery on the Thrissur - Shornur Highway, this temple carries a rich history. About four centuries ago, the esteemed Kuroor Illam family relocated from Palakkad to Vengilassery, gaining vast landholdings through the support of the Chengazhi Nambiars, then rulers of Chengazhikode. Among the members of this lineage was Gouri Antharjanam, a devout follower
more of Lord Krishna since her youth. However, her marital bliss was brief, leaving her a childless widow. Yet, in her solitude, she found solace in her devotion to Unnikrishnan, living a life of asceticism. Legends speak of their invisible companionship within the Illam's grounds. The temple arose at the hallowed ground where the footprints of Lord Krishna and Gouri Antharjanam left their mark, with Gouri Antharjanam later revered as the legendary Kurooramma. Despite the eventual relocation of the Kuroor Illam to Adat in Thrissur District, and the loss of much of their property, a small parcel of land remained, now graced by the temple. In 2002, the Ashtamangalam Prasna uncovered a powerful presence of Vishnu and Sreekrishna Chaithanya in the area. It revealed Krishna's form as a child, accompanied by a female figure, identified as Kurooramma alongside Balagopala. Consequently, plans were laid for a temple featuring Balagopalan as the presiding deity, accompanied by Durga, Vettekkaran, and a memorial for Kurooramma. The temple draws pilgrims not only from across the nation but also from abroad, seeking the fulfilment of their desires. Throughout the year, numerous rituals and ceremonies adorn its halls. Bhagavatham is recited daily, while on the first Thursday of each Malayalam month, special Sooktharchana rituals like Swayamvarasooktha and Bhagya sooktha are conducted for hundreds of devotees. The annual Prathishta day, celebrated grandly on the Rohini Star of Malayalam Month Meenam, and the Vaisakha Month's plethora of special poojas and Bhagavatha Sapthaham further enrich the temple's spiritual tapestry. Legends abound about Kurooramma and Lord Krishna. Despite her brief marriage, Kurooramma dedicated herself to the worship of Krishna, alongside contemporaries like Poonthanam, Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, and Melpathur Bhattathiri. Her unwavering faith in Krishna's grace was evidenced in the healing of a devotee's severe abdominal pain, contrasting with his unsuccessful appeals to Swamiyar. Another tale recounts Kurooramma's invitation to Swamiyar for Bhiksha, a customary act of alms-giving. Despite prior commitments, divine intervention led Swamiyar to her Illam, where an unexpected attendant, identified as Balagopalan, washed his feet. This event underscored Kurooramma's devoutness, preferred by Lord Krishna over Swamiyar's worship. Countless devotees share personal testimonies of blessings received at the temple. Whether it's the birth of a child after years of longing or the revival of failing businesses, each story echoes the divine grace believed to permeate the precincts of the Sreekrishna Temple at Kurooramma.
