Attingal Thiruvarattukavu Devi Temple

History

Thiruvarattukavu Devi Temple has a rich history rooted in the region's past as a small independent principality. The last member of the royal family, Queen Avani Amma Thamburatti, took the significant step of adopting the king of Travancore at the time, beseeching him to assume control of the kingdom. Additionally, she requested the adoption of a girl child from the Chirakkal Royal family of Northern Malabar to oversee the principality under the king's guidance. Following the queen's demise, the king fulfilled her wishes by adopting two girls from the Chirakkal Royal family, who brought with them a sacred murthi of the Goddess from their homeland. This divine more idol is now worshipped in the present temple. Initially, the princesses worshipped the murthi within the palace, hence it was known as Palliyara Bhagavathy. Subsequently, a new temple was erected near the palace atop a small hill, where the murthi was consecrated. This new temple came to be known as Thiru Viragu Kattiya Kavu and PuthanKavu. Accessing the temple requires ascending a flight of stairs. This temple is renowned for its Ariyittu Vaazhcha festival, which takes place on the ninth day of the Malayalam month of Makaram (mid-January to mid-February).
