Kuzhuppilly Balakrishna Swamy Temple

History

Kuzhuppilly Sree Balakrishna Swamy Temple has a rich history dating back to the 16th century when Goud Saraswat Brahmins migrated from Goa and settled in the vicinity of Cochin. Among these settlers was Venkateswara Pai, also known as Vensu Pai, who established himself in Kuzhupilly on land bestowed by the Raja of Cochin. Anatha Pai, the son of Vensu Pai, on a pilgrimage to Tirupathi, procured metal idols and dolls for his children, one of which was an idol of Balakrishna. The children, in their innocence, played with these idols and offered prayers. However, the children began to fall ill regularly, prompting the elders to believe that more the idols were not being properly revered. Despite attempts to rectify this through prayer, the children's suffering persisted, leading to tragic deaths in the family. Distressed, Anantha Pai sought guidance from the esteemed Astrologer Sri Adoor Chakrapani, who recommended the construction of a separate temple for the Balakrishna idol and the regular performance of rituals. Viewing Balakrishna as akin to his child, Anantha Pai divided his properties between his offspring and the deity, leading to the construction of a small temple on the land dedicated to Balakrishna, with its consecration in 1895 AD. However, internal conflicts within the Vensu Pai family over time led to disruptions in the temple's rituals. Meanwhile, the number of GSB families in the area grew, prompting a need for a communal place of worship. Consequently, the Balakrishna temple was handed over to the community for collective management, although the Vensu Pai family retained a special status in its affairs. Eventually, community members proposed the construction of a new temple in a more accessible location. A. Govinda Shenoy generously donated about one and a half acres of land for this purpose, but progress was slow due to a lack of cooperation and initiative among the members, resulting in the project remaining incomplete for over 35 years. Subsequently, a group of youths formed a Seva Samithi and took charge of completing the temple. Through voluntary service, they finished the construction of the inner sanctum, and in 1964 AD, the deity's idol was ceremoniously moved to the new temple facing east. Efforts to enhance the temple continued, with the construction of a decorative pillared hall known as Aanapandal in the late eighties. Additionally, committee members undertook the construction of a shopping complex and a marriage hall. Inside the temple, intricate paintings of the Dasavathara adorn the walls. The ceremonial flag installation (Dhwajapratishta) took place in 1991, and the centenary of the consecration was celebrated in 1995 AD.
