This temple is situated at Menamkulam, with the Arabian Sea on the west and Veli Lake and Kadinamkulam lake on the south and north. Since it is situated on the side of the sea it is called Palkara, reminiscent of the ocean of milk in which Maha Vishnu resides. Since it is near vast extensive fields, it also came to be known as Elayil temple. Legend says that while Vilwamangalath Swamiyar was coming in search of Anathankadu of Sree Padmanabha Swami, he consecrated deities in many temples. When he came to Menamkulam he stayed as the guest of a Brahmin family there. He then consecrated an idol more of a goddess imagined to be the consort of Maha Vishnu, and the embodiment of wealth and beauty, for the family to worship. The Nairs who came from different parts for the construction of the Padmanabha Swamy temple, took up duties in the temple. The land on which the family of Brahmins lived and where the temple today stands were given to these Nairs.
