Kaliyar Madam Vishnumaya Temple

History

Centuries ago, within the realm of Cherukootu Desham, the ancestral home of Pozhathilpadi was bustling with labourers and servants. Through generations, the members of Pozhathilpadi's ancestral home had devoutly worshipped Chatanswamy and its associated deities. Meanwhile, at the thriving ancestral house of Cherukotu Mana in Chorottur Desham, the senior Thampuran of Pozhathil Mana employed Kothacharyan as a labourer. Kothacharyan, carrying his revered idols, settled on his rural land in Chorottur village. At that time, the village was gripped by the dark forces of black magic, including Odiyavidhya and Oodiya Shalyam, instilling fear and trepidation among the villagers. However, with Kothacharyan's arrival, the malevolent spirits vanished, and the black more magicians practising dark arts fled the area. In gratitude, the villagers of Chorottur and neighbouring areas held Kothacharyan in high esteem. With his steadfast devotion and meticulous rituals, Kothacharyan worshipped Sree Vishnumaya Swamy and other benevolent spirits, protecting malevolent forces. Despite his reverence, Kothacharyan did not construct a temple for public worship. Following Kothacharyan's passing, his son Sree Karyacharyar and subsequent generations continued the tradition of worship and rituals. However, as Karyacharyar's descendants dispersed to other locales, the rituals gradually ceased. Consequently, the neglected idols grew resentful, causing turmoil within the Pozhathil family and Chorottur village. Seeking guidance, the Pozhathilpadi family consulted astrological rituals, which revealed that the disruptions in worship had angered the idols. As a solution, the astrological rituals prescribed the construction of a temple dedicated to the idols. Thus, the Kaliyarmadom temple arose in Chorottur village, housing idols of Sree Vishnumaya Chatanswamy and other associated spirits. This temple, born out of divine will, stands as a testament to the enduring reverence for Sree Vishnumaya and the protective spirits, safeguarding the village and its inhabitants from malevolent forces.
