Sree Mulayankavu Bhagavathy Temple

History

Sree Mulayankavu Bhagavathy Temple, situated on the Mulayankavilamma's plateau within the sanctified village ambience of Valluvanad, lies westward from the core of Palakkad, close to the warmth of Kuntipuzha in Malappuram district. Renowned across Kerala for its rituals and plethora of festivals, the temple spans over vast grounds, encompassing the village panchayat areas of Kulukallur, Nellaya, Vallapuzha, and Chalavara in Palakkad district. Legend has it that the temple's origin story mirrors that of Devikshetra. Once a dense forest of bamboo, the site transformed when a Harijan Samutrayam woman witnessed blood oozing from a rock while sharpening her tool. This revelation prompted the villager of Veluttedam, Thampran, to construct more a temple on the spot, believed to be Swayambhu. To this day, the temple and its surroundings are known as Mulayankavu, either due to the bamboo-rich environment or the identification of the Goddess Chaitanya with a Mulaya woman, granting serfs and agricultural workers a special place in temple rituals. Mulayankavu stands unique with two mukhamandapams, each with its tale. According to one, the goddess, displeased by an elephant brought to the temple, turned westward in anger, causing the elephant to petrify due to her curse. Another story recounts how workers, frightened by an elephant in the bamboo groves, sought refuge with the goddess, resulting in the elephant's transformation into stone. A boulder resembling an elephant, located a kilometre from the temple on the Koppam-Mulayankav road, serves as a testament to these tales. The temple's primary offering is Guruthi Tarpanam, with important ceremonies related to bullocking and festivities performed on the north side. The flagpole stands on the north, and the Athrassery Manakas hold the right to open the north side. Notably, the temple's deity bears a striking resemblance to the idol of Sabarimala Ayyappaswamy, a rarity among goddess temples. Mulayankavu is also devoid of sub-deities, yet the temple grounds host the spirit of Sri Kunjunni, where devotees light a lamp daily. Adjacent to the temple is the Purvachara floor, a gathering spot for devotees. With its rich history, sacred rituals, and mystical tales, the Sree Mulayankavu Bhagavathy Temple remains a cherished spiritual haven for worshippers.
