Ayyappankave Siva Subramania Temple

History

Ayyappankave Sree Siva Subramania Swamy Temple in Kottayi, Palakkad, holds a rich history dating back about two centuries when it was established by the ancestors of the residents. Dedicated to Lord Siva Subramania, the temple also houses sanctuaries for Ganapathy, Balasubramania, Nagas, and Krishna. The main deity, Lord Siva Subramanya, is depicted as two intertwined serpents resembling the Arabic numeral "8" with a Siva Lingam atop the upper circle. Revered as "Varaprasadhi," Lord Sree Siva Subramania Swamy is believed to fulfil the prayers of devotees. The village itself is named after the temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappa, known as Chembarakulam Ayyappankavu, situated to the east of the more village. According to legend, the village was bestowed upon Brahmins for their ritualistic services aimed at the welfare of the world. In return, the villagers express gratitude by conducting prayers, such as Rudra Kramarchana and Annadhanam, on Uthiram day in the month of Makaram (as per the Malayalam calendar). The Uthiram Vaarm is held on a rotational basis every four years by Ayilam, Chembai, Mekanamkulam, and Ayyappankave Villages, with the last one occurring in 2022 and the next scheduled for 2026. Rituals like Kaavadi Ezhunnallath on Thaipoosam and Panguni Uthram Day, Mudra Vadi, and Vel placement during the Annual Ratholsava Day, and Koodi Kaazhcha on Annual Aarattu Day, all contribute to the vibrant religious life of the village. The discovery of hidden idols, guided by divine dreams, further enriched the spiritual landscape of the village. Shri Hariharan Pattar (Iyer) was instructed in a dream by Lord Subramania to uncover the idols buried beneath a snake pit near the eastern bank of the temple tank, leading to the discovery of three idols: one Lingam, one Ganapathy, and another depicting intertwined serpents with a Siva Lingam in the centre. The Lingam idol was taken to Ayilam village and installed as AKILESWARAN, while the Ganapathy and intertwined serpent idols were brought to Ayyappankavu Village. The stone sculpted with serpents intertwined with the Siva Lingam was named and dedicated to Lord Sivasubramania. These idols were installed in the heart of the village under a thatched roof, igniting deep devotion among the villagers towards Lord Sivasubramania over time.
