According to legends, a Brahmin belonging to the Itinjimmal family, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, worshipped Sree Guruvayoorappan as his favourite deity. He used to visit Guruvayoor temple regularly. Once when he was returning from there after the Guruvayoor Ekadashi, he sat down to rest under a banyan tree which stood in front of the place where the temple is situated today. Sitting there he prayed to Guruvayoorappan and said that due to old age, it would not be possible for him to come to Guruvayoor anymore. Then he heard a bell being rung from the tree and a voice told him not
more to go to Guruvayoor as the Lord would be present at this spot from then onwards. Since the words were heard along with the chiming of the bell, the place came to be known as Thrumanikkara. Guruvayoor Ekadashi is celebrated very religiously at this temple every year.
